Sloterdijk originated in the 13th century, when the Spaarndammerdijk
was built to protect against the flooding of the IJ.
The stone parish church, dedicated to Saint Peter, was built around 1479.
In 1572, the Catholic Church is destroyed by angry Geuzen,
after a failed attack on Amsterdam.
The church is provisionally restored and from 1578 protestant services were held.
The church was rebuilt in 1664, the 15th-century church tower
was incorporated into the building.
Due to the construction of the Coentunnelweg and the expansion
of the western harbor area, more and more of the village. disappeared.
In 1921, the municipality of Sloten was annexed by the city of Amsterdam.
The municipality of Amsterdam wants to further develop the area as an industrial
and office area and to demolish the remaining village and church.
This plan could not be carried out because there are monumental tombs
in the cemetery and some graves around the church have eternal rights.
