The Agnietenkapel was a double chapel from 1470 and belonged to the nunnery
of the Franciscan Order of Sisters of Saint Agnes.
In 1631 the Athenaeum Illustre became the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam in the chapel.
The first professors of the Athenaeum Illustre were Gerardus Johannes Vossius professor in history
and Caspar Barlaeus professor of philosophy.
