The Houthaven was dug in 1876, at the same time as the North Sea Canal. 

The port was used for the wood processing industry and timber transhipment.

Since 2010, the Houthaven has a new purpose and 1700 new homes are being built. 

The Pontsteiger building 2019 (Arons & Gelauff Architecten) has homes in the more expensive segment.
