The Kattengat was originally a narrow canal, filled in in 1601.
The soap maker Laurens Jansz Spiegel built 2 houses with stepped gable in 1614.
These were given the name "De Goud Spiegel" nr 6 and "De Silveren Spiegel" nr 4.
In 1671, the new Lutheran Church was built next to the houses.
