The Amsterdam doctor Samuel Sarphati (1813-1866) initiated numerous projects 

for the welfare and improvement of the living conditions of the population in Amsterdam
Sarphatie also wanted to make Amsterdam more beautiful, so he contributed to the realization of 

the Paleis van Volksvlijt and the construction of the Amstel hotel.
