The old police headquarters was located on 

the Oudezijds Achterburgwal from 1833 to 1941. 

Before that it was used as spinhuis. 

A spinhuis was a penitentiary for women. 

As punishment, they had to sew or spin flax and wool. 

Due to a lack of space, four adjacent buildings were purchased 

to expand the police station in 1909. 

Due space shortage and poor condition of the newly built buildings. 

The police moved in 1941 to the newly built police headquarters on the Elandsgracht.
