The grain silo ‘Korthals Altes’ was taken into use at the Silodam in 1897.
The stone grain silo named after city councilor J.P. Korthals Altes (1827-1904).
Due to lack of space, a second concrete silo was built next to it in 1952.
The concrete silo designed by Jan Postma (1890-1962) is 45 m long
and 37 m high; the shafts are 15 m² in size.
The silo was in use until 1987, after which the grain trade was moved to the Vlothaven.
The building was squatted and infamous dance parties were held.
The buildings have been preserved for demolition and since 1999
the concrete silo has been renovated and contains 1,600m² of commercial space,
above, 8 floors with 84 social rental homes.
On the 2 top floors are 11 owner-occupied homes been built .
