In 1619 Lenartsz de Jonge bought 3 lots on Keizersgracht to establish a millinery.
On the middle building a gable stone of a 'hat' with which the hatter drew attention to his company.
In 1629 the building was bought by the Remonstrants.
A year later the secret church Vrijburg was built.
In order not to get in trouble with the government, the building should resemble an
ordinary house from the outside and the church will be built in the garden behind the plot.
With its two floors and arched windows, the main hall is the largest
and oldest preserved hidden church in the Netherlands.
In 1876 the church is renovated and gets an open entrance on the canal.
In 1933 the Remonstratse community left the church.
Today, the red hat is a cultural debate center and organizes debates,
lectures, literary and musical programs.
