The Singelgracht with city walls was built around 1660 as a defense line for the city.
An 8 kilometer city defense with 26 pentagonal bulwarks and eight gates.
From 1875, a large part of the city wall and the bulwarks were demolished and the Singelgracht straightened.
The Frederik Hendrik neighborhood on the Singelgracht was built between 1880 and 1900.
As a youngster I fantasized, tunnels were built under the water in the canals,
for car traffic and supplies to the shops in the city center.
So that there was more space for cyclists and pedestrians above ground .
A little water had to remain in the canal for the cruise and pleasure boats.
Nearly fifty years later, my childhood fantasies become reality and the
underground of the canals was used with the construction of the Singel garage.
