In 1964, the first commercial television was broadcast from REM eiland
As there was no legislation for commercial TV at the time, a location
just outside the Dutch territorial waters was chosen.
The first broadcasting of TV and radio programs, named
radio and TV Noord zee, started on August 15.
On December 1, the Dutch government passed an emergency law prohibiting
further broadcasting from the sea.
On December 17, broadcasts were stopped and REM eiland
transmitting equipment was seized.
From 1974, the sea platform was used by Rijkswaterstaat to measure
the temperature of the water, the salinity and the height of the waves.
In 2009, the platform was bought and renovated by a housing association.
Two years later, it was given a permanent place in the Houthaven. Nowadays,
it hosts a restaurant that offers a beautiful view of the harbor and
the new residential area under construction.
