The Wilhelmina Gasthuis was built in 1891 on the site where
the ‘plague house’ was previously located (1635).
The Pathological Anatomical Laboratory on the
W.G site was taken into use in 1931.
The architect A.R. Hulshoff (1880-1958) designed the building,
which is richly decorated with sculptures by Aldo Krop.
Part of the building was a laboratory and the other part served
as a mortuary for people who had died in the hospital.
In 1983, the Academic Hospital (AMC) moved to a
new building in Amsterdam Bijlmermeer.
After the move, the buildings were saved from demolition
and used as a breeding ground for artists and start-ups.
In the Pathological Anatomical Laboratory, punk and new-wave parties were held,
where people danced and pogoed next to the cutting tables of the mortuary.
