The official name of Betondorp is 'Tuindorp Watergraafsmeer', but because half of the neighborhood
consisted of concrete houses, it soon got the name 'Betondorp' (Concrete Village).
Betondorp comprises approximately 2000 homes and was built between 1923 and 1925.
Some of the homes are traditionally built with brick.
Experiments were carried out with ten different types of concrete as building materials for the other houses.
This experiment was decided by the high prices of building materials and the lack of skilled workers.
In the center of Betondorp is 'de Brink', designed by Dick Greiner (1891-1964).
Around the central square of 'de Brink', there are a number of medium-sized houses,
shops, a library and an community building.
From the square, the five main streets depart in different directions; this makes the Brink the center of the district.
Because of the narrow streets with gardens and the low residential buildings, Betondorp has a village character.
The most famous residents of Betondorp include: Willeke van Ammelrooy, Johan Cruijff and Gerard and Karel van 't Reve.
