Anne Frank huis

Amsterdam Atlas
collage: 3 photos
format: 60 x 60 cm

Dirk van Delft built this building on the Prinsengracht in 1635 right next to the Westertoren (see panurbana 01 and 151).
In 1740 the facade was renewed and a new house was built at the rear of the building.
The most famous diary in the world, by Anne Frank (1929-1945), is said to be written in this secret annexe.
She and her sister Margot, father Otto and mother Edith Frank went into hiding from the German occupiers from 1942 to 1944.
They live in the secret annexe together with dentist Fritz Pfeffer, Herman Pels (Otto Frank's business partner), his wife Auguste and son Peter.
After two years, the eight people in hiding are betrayed and arrested on August 4, 1944 by the German Siecherheitsdienst.
Anne Frank dies in February 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, only father Otto Frank will survive the war.
In 1957, Anne Frank's hiding place was saved from demolition and the Anne Frank Foundation was established.
The back house can still be visited.
