'Die Port van Cleve' was originally a beer house, belonging to the beer brewery 'De Hooiberg'.
The beer brewery was located behind the beer house and has existed since 1592.
In 1864 Gerard Adriaan Heineken (1841-1893) buys the brewery and moves it to the Stadhouderskade.
Heineken then sells the beer house to the Hulscher brothers.
During a renovation they find a plaque with the text 'Die Port van Cleve': this will be the name
of their beer house where only beer from the brewery “De Hooiberg” is served.
In 1874, the beer house was expanded with a restaurant - 'Eethuis De Poort' - where
the 'numbered steaks' made their appearance.
In 1888 the Hulscher brothers asked the architect Isaac Gosschalk (1838-1907) to make
a new design and after a major renovation the building got its current appearance.
In the same year, bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' also opened here, with the unique
Delfst blue tile frieze of over 26 meters. Since 1961, 'Die Port van Cleve' has been a hotel.
