In 1973 Rivierstaete was built on the former site of the Dutch car factory Spijker,
at the time the largest office building (28,000 square meters) in Europe.
The colossal white building with eight staggered floors had small windows and looked
like a crooked building box lined with six million gray and white tiles.
Due to the contrast with the surrounding residential area of red bricks,
the building was nicknamed 'the monkey rock'.
The design is by the Rotterdam architect Huig Maaskant (1907-1977) who designed
many buildings in Rotterdam, such as the Groothandelsgebouw (1953),
the Hilton hotel (1963) and the Euromast (1960).
In 2016, the Riversteate was renovated and the gray-white tiles were replaced
by large windows over the entire length of the building.
A 325 square meter roof terrace was realized on the ninth floor.
The renovated building was given a new name: Amsteldok.
