On the foundations of an old mansion called Plancius, a new building was erected
for the Jewish men's singing association ‘Oefening Baart Kunst’.
The new building was also named after the famous Petrus Plancius (1552-1622, real name
Pieter Platevoet) who was a preacher, astronomer, cartographer and governor of
the United East India Company (VOC).
In the new Plancius building there was a concert hall with 1000 seats and
parties, plays and concerts were also performed there.
In 1913 the building was sold to the Taxi-Auto-Maatschapij (TAM), which was
later taken over by the Amsterdam Carriage Company (ARM).
The building was later given various functions, until
the Resistance Museum opened its doors there in 1999.
