The first issue of the Algemeen Handelsblad appeared in 1828.
In 1831 the newspaper merged with the Nieuwe Amsterdamse Courant.
Due to the rapid growth of the newspaper, Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927) was commissioned.
In 1901 to design a new office building for the newspaper
and the building was taken into use in 1903.
From 1960 there was a collaboration with the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant
with which the newspaper merged in 1970. That same year,
the first issue of the NRC Handelsblad appears. Because the newspaper is printed
in Rotterdam, the Amsterdam editorial office moved to Rotterdam in 1977.
In 1978, the old Handelsblad complex in Amsterdam is squatted.
While the squatters occupy the building, the building is sold several times to speculators.
In 1980, the municipality of Amsterdam bought the building and basic facilities
such as water, gas and electricity were installed.
It was completed in 1986 and the residents started paying rent.
In 1988 the building was thoroughly renovated and in 1990 the current complex was officially opened.
