Hendrik Petrus Berlage
Amsterdam Atlas
collage: 7 photos
format: 70 x 70 cm
The Skyscraper (1932) is officially called the "12-storey house" and was
designed by Jan Frederik Staal (1879-1940), see also Panurbana 060.
In front of the skyscraper is the statue of the Amsterdam architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage
(1856-1934), the designer of the Urban Development Plan South.
The sculpture was made by Hildo Lucien Krop (1884-1970), who
in 1956 was given the honorary title City Sculptor of Amsterdam.
The plinth, on which a mason, draughtsman, chief, scaffolder and a
sculptor are depicted, is a tribute to the anonymous workers.
On top of the plinth, a corpulent Berlage stands firmly on his legs,
with a triangle – the attribute of architects – under his arm.
