Sometimes a building blows you off your feet.
Unsuspectingly, I cycled along Wibautstraat until my eye fell on
a black and white striped building with large windows and an outside staircase
that leads across the facade to a roof terrace on the 6th floor.
It is the office of design studio Thonik, founded by Thomas Widdershoven (Tho)
and Nikki Gonissen (Nik). They design for, among others: the Socialist Party,
the HollandFestival, the VPRO and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
The Thonik building (2020) was designed by Thomas Widdershoven and
Arjan van Ruyven (MMX Architects). The collaboration between the graphic designer
and the architect has resulted in a playful and multifunctional building.
The building was declared winner in the 'Icon and Identity' category in the Best Building Award 2021.
