After the construction of the North Sea Canal in 1876 (panurbana 28),
several jetties were constructed behind Central Station.
These were put into use as a new loading and unloading place for barges.
The barge is the oldest form of public transport and was carried out by freight ships.
These ships had a special permit and were allowed to transport passengers in addition to goods.
The Alkmaar shipowner Johannes Hendricus Smits provided
water transport between Hoorn, Amsterdam and Antwerp.
In 1932, he had a new office built for 'Reederij West-Friesland'
on Pier 10 by the architect J. de Meijer (1878-1950).
The small building of 6.65 by 15.70 meters is reminiscent of a ship.
The semi-circular glass bay window (which served as an executive office)
pointed to the bow and provided all-round views over the IJ.
A ship's lantern was placed at the top of the chimney.
In the 1960s, the barge disappeared and the quays fell into disrepair,
only the office of Reederij West-Friesland remains.
In 1988, the old office was converted into Pier 10 restaurant,
after which it was given other catering functions.
