The Zuiderkerkhof on the east side of the Zuiderkerk (or the Janskerk) had two entrances.
On the Zandstraat and one on the St. Antoniebreestraat, this is where the common people were buried,
in the church people of distinction. The church was opened in 1611 and designed by
architect Hendrick Cornelisz de Keyser (1565-1621) (see also East Indies house Panurbana 129,
Westerkerk Panurbana 6). After his death he was buried in the church.
In 1866 the southern cemetery was decommissioned and cleared.
In 1975 the Nieuwmarkt riots against the construction of the metro and the construction
of a four-lane highway through the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood.
The colossal concrete metro caissons were built at the Zuiderkerkhof, which were later sunk.
The Pentagon housing complex was built next to the Zuiderkerkhof and after completion of the
construction work, the entrance gate to the cemetery was replaced in 1985.
