The 'gatehouse of Stalpaert' was designed by city architect Daniel Stalpaert (1615-1676) on behalf of the Admiralty.
This gatehouse gave access to the walled Admiralty site on Kattenburg,
which contained a shipyard, sheds, a forge and a warehouse (see Panurbana 101 's Lands Zeemagazijn).
The area was off limits to civilians.
The shipyard had a number of slipways where hundreds of warships were built in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Most of the yard's employees lived on the other side of the walled area at Kattenburg.
After the bankruptcy of the Admiralty in 1795, the site was used by the Royal Navy.
Due to budget cuts at the Ministry of Defense, a large part of the site was sold.
The site is now being redeveloped by the municipality of Amsterdam into a car-free green neighborhood
with sustainable homes, workplaces and a city park.
The Ministry of Defense will remain present in a compact barracks on a smaller part of the site.
