Amsterdam Atlas
collage: 3 photos
format: 35 x 35 cm
Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919) was a freethinker
and founder of socialism and anarchism in the Netherlands.
He was committed to the fight against social injustice
and stood up for the socially weak and the workers.
When it becomes known that General Jo van Heutsz (see Panurbana (171) will
receive a monument, this leads to protests in socialist and communist circles.
In 1928, a committee was set up for a statue for Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis.
The money is raised through donations from workers and left-wing organizations.
The statue, made by the sculptor Johan Polet (1894-1971), consists
of a cast bronze Domela Nieuwenhuis with a clenched fist.
A chained Prometheus with a torch is depicted on the basalt plinth.
Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to men.
