In the bicycle flat in front of Central Station (2001-2023) there was room for at least 2500 bicycles.
The structure, designed by VMX Architects, is 100 meters long, 14 meters wide and three storeys high.
This free bicycle parking was placed during the renovation around Central Station, to compensate
for the shortage of bicycle parking spaces, and would be available for five years.
The bicycle flat was finally closed in 2023.
In 2023, a new bicycle shed with a capacity for 7000 bicycles, designed by Wurck Architects,
has been opened under the water in front of Central Station (see Panurbana 78).
In addition, an underground bicycle shed for 4000 bicycles has been built at the back
of Central Station on the IJ boulevard, designed by VenhoevenCS.
In the coming years, work will be done on a bicycle parking facility with 8800 bicycle parking spaces
under the station on the East side, designed by Arcadis; the opening is planned for 2030.
The closed bicycle flat will remain in place for the time being. The municipality expects that there will be
a shortage of bicycle parking spaces at the station around 2024 and the bicycle flat can then be used again.
