The Water Curtain on the former Zuiderkerkhof (see Panurbana 126)
was designed by Hans Hagenbeek (1942-2021).
The Nieuwmarkt metro station is located below the Zuiderkerkhof.
After the construction of the East Line of the metro (1977),
houses were partly built on the new metro tubes.
An air shaft of 5 by 5 meters has been integrated into the existing buildings
for the discharge of the subway's pressure air and ventilation.
To camouflage the enormous air shaft, which extends to the roof of the building,
the architect designed a water wall.
At the top of the water feature, in an arch with St. Andrew's crosses,
the water flows down along mirrored glass plates.
The water is collected in a semi-circular marble basin.
The Water Wall has the shape of an Amsterdammertje
(a post that serves to prevent unwanted parking).
On March 24, 1984, Mayor Ed van Thijn unveiled the new square with Water Curtain.
