The Rietlanden was a swampy area to the east of the city where mainly reeds grew.
After the construction of the Central Station, the Rietlanden shunting yard was constructed in 1878.
The tracks connected the various eastern harbor sheds, the Municipal Trade Depot (panurbana 117) and the cattle market.
During the Second World War this was a gathering place from which Amsterdam Jews were deported to Westerbork camp.
After the war, the railway area was used intensively. In the 1970s, freight transport declined and the marshalling yard was
decommissioned on January 1, 1990. The freight tracks made way for the new residential areas of Rietlanden and Sporenburg.
Since 2005, the tram tracks of line 26 (in a sunken route Central Station - IJburg) and line 7
(at street level from Sloterdijk station to Azartplein) have crossed.
