The buildings of the architect Gerrit van Arkel (1858-1918) are notable for their asymmetrical details.
Such as the Astoria building (panurbana 073), the Helios building (panurbana 091),
the Transvaalse Boer (panurbana 093), the diamond polishing company Asscher (panurbana 112)
and the Marine Insurance Company Ltd (panurbana124).
The luxury bakery of D.C. Stähle was built entirely in Jugenstil in 1889; van Arkel also designed the interior.
The bakery is richly decorated with tile pictures depicting the bread baking process.
An old plaque dating from 1748 has been placed on the outer facade in the alley,
originating from a building that previously stood there.

In trouebel tydt is 't aangeleyt, In Vreedens tydt volbragt,

In God heb ik myn hoop gevlyet, In wien ik alles wagt.

In troubled times it is finished, In peaceful times it is accomplished,
In God I have set my hopes, In Whom I wait all things.
